The beaches of Monte Conero

Beaches

There are two types of beach resort in the Riviera. There are small resorts lie below the limestone peak of Monte Conero, such Portonovo, Sirolo, Numana. Then there are the bigger places with a lively atmosphere, busy nightlife, plenty of visitors abroad such as Marcelli. As well as pay sections, there are also free stretches of public beaches.

THE NUMBERS ON THESE MAPS RELATE TO THE NUMBERS AND DESCRIPTIONS THAT FOLLOW.

Beaches
FROM NORTH TO SOUTH PORTONOVO

MEZZAVALLE BEACH (12)

Description: this beach is a rare paradise that the natural environment has preserved. Only free beaches.

Getting to the beach: From Ancona, head eastwards through the city to the coast road, and pick up the signs for Monte Conero. The road soon begins to rise and within a short while leaves the city suburbs to arrive at the slopes of Monte Conero. Mezzavalle beach is located just before Portonovo bay. You will have to cover approximately a kilometer on foot in order to catch up the beach. This footpath is steep and the beac hhas not got facilities for young children.

SERVICES: few, no umbrellas, sun beds restaurant, or toilets. Tough access.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PORTONOVO BEACH (11)
Description: pleasant beach sand rather than pebbled with serried ranks of umbrellas and deck chairs and italian flesh! On the bay, often crowded, there are few restaurants with a breathtaking view balcony serving fish dishes.

Getting to the beach: reached by car from the Monte Conero road (there are free parking areas) or by bus from the parking zone on the top of the hill.

THIS IS THE WINDSURFING BEACH OF THE AREA WITH THERMAL WINDS ALMOST EVERY AFTERNOON..!

Easy access and all facilities available. windsurfing equipment available for hire..

"LA VELA" BEACH (10)

Description: A spectacular beach with a rock, shaped like a sail ("vela" in Italian). It's a free public beach: the last of the south versant of the bay.

Getting to the beach: reached by car from Ancona to Portonovo Bay. At Portonovo you have to park at Capannina beach and walk for few minutes.

Easy access and all services

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DUE SORELLE BEACH (8)

Description: the most singular, attractive and secluded stretch of unique coast: a white pebble beach with two spectacular rocks in front. This beach remains umbrella free and has no services that the others have - so take all tht you are likey to need with you!

Getting to the beach: is reached only by boat from Numana port (see below).

Services: None

Map: to follow

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SASSI NERI BEACH (7)

Description: a long, black pebbled (hence the name) strand of beach; it is one of the best in the coast - it is attached to the beach below and arrived at by same bus - a fantastic view as you round the corner at the top of the hill and begin the decent. I have heard that there are nudist areas....!

Getting to the beach: reached by bus from the bus station near the Town Hall (half an hour runs) or on foot from Republic Park of Sirolo. Same car park as below, and a bus pickup from there with at one euro per head is recommended!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SAN MICHELE BEACH (6)

Description: This is a lovely thin strip of beach that is reportedly washing away - so in the future will havebeen reclaimed by the sea. In high summer it is not like this photo, but is lined with umbrellas - costing 5 euro's each, and sun beds also cost 5 euros. It really is stunning and the water is clear - good for snorkelling and playing in the swell that occasionlly seems to pick up.

Getting to the beach: reached by bus from the bus station near the Town Hall There is a car park (field) which you can pay 6 euros per day (handy hint park along the back which will be in shade on your return. I will put a map of Sirollo up in the near future - if you read this before then, please give me a shotu and I will update it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

URBANI BEACH (5)

Description: With a green pine-wood as a backdrop this beach has a charming and half moon shape strand on a bay of Sirolo. All servies that you may require will be available.
